Microsoft released their newest Surface pen foldable device, which is meant to replace the other major versions of the company’s tablets. The pen folds differently than the current versions and now comes with new features such as improved battery life and video calling support.

The lack of ports
Many people are familiar with the Surface Pro 8 design. The new device is almost identical to its predecessor, despite its many new features in 2021.
This computer has a premium blend of materials, so it’s not a cheap option. It feels great in use, but the weight may make it uncomfortable for you to use for more than a few minutes at a time.
The Surface snugly and comfortably fits in your hands. It’s light and easy to hold, even for a thirteen-inch device. There are some budget tablet devices that compromise with build quality but the Surface feels very sturdy because of its thicker base and wide kickstand.

There’s more to go over when you turn the device over. First and foremost, it boasts a 1080p front-facing camera that has not been matched by other devices on the market. This is huge for those who like to record and broadcast from their Windows devices.
Microsoft has included a new Neural Processing Unit chip (NPU) into the Pro 9 which gives it new video effects that can change the experience of a call or meeting once you upgrade.
Potential improvements for video calls include automatic framing (where your face will be always in frame and the camera focus on you) and eye contact (where your eyes will only appear to be looking at the camera in the call). I don’t know that these ideas work well.
A Microsoft spokesperson has stated that these issues are extremely rare, but it’s worth considering if these features are important to you. However, some of the other features—notably Cortana—are certainly impressive.
Most video calling apps offer blur effects, but the Surface Pro 9 does it better. Edge detection has dramatically improved, and it’s nice to have the option for either a heavy ‘standard blur’ or lighter ‘portrait blur’.
The noise-cancelling mic with extra clarity on the M8 is a feature that’s automatic with Voice Focus. It senses when there are multiple voices so you can focus on your voice in loud environments with ease.
For those who want a seamless video-calling experience, the Surface Pro 9 offers an unmatched option. It doesn’t need to connect separate accessories because it’s one of the only Windows devices where there’s no need to adjust settings.
The Pro 9 lets you unlock with Windows Hello, just like other recent Microsoft laptops. Our IR camera also lets you control all your peripherals, as well as take a better picture of your face using FaceTime and Skype. However, there’s no fingerprint reader – I don’t understand why we can’t have both.

Promoting vibrant and eye-catching visuals is crucial to making attractive content. According to testing done with the SpyderX Pro calibration tool, colours are accurate, with no colour banding issues, plus 87% of DCI-P3 and 85% of AdobeRGB coverage.
This projector can get impressively bright, reaching up to 465 nits in testing. This means that outdoor use is a realistic prospect for this projector. However, visibility will still be an issue on sunny days.
One masterful feature of the Razer Blade Pro 17 is its 60Hz refresh rate. This means you can put it on a lower setting to save your battery, but that doesn’t make it feel as fluid and responsive as on gaming machines or even smartphones.
Microsoft decided not to upgrade the speaker quality in their Pro 9 with dual stereo speakers. Just because they decided not to update doesn’t mean that other companies won’t. The Pro 9 manages to offer great quality audio at all volumes, without any distortion.

5G support for the first time
Intel recently made an announcement about updating their Surface Pro laptop line to the latest and greatest in performance. The one I tested has specs that are very different from the usual.
Microsoft has announced a new laptop called the Surface Book 2. It uses SQ3 by ARM processor, which is based on Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 CPU. The name hints at two previous generations of mobile devices, both of which were used in the Surface Pro X.
The hours of standby time are impressive, but performance is disappointing as a result.
Unfortunately, the Pro 9 didn’t live up to my expectations. The most noticeable effect was being unable to work on multiple tasks at once. You’ll be taken out of the app you’re working in or has been already started in just as soon as you switched to another one, making for a distracting and frustrating experience.
The Logitech CPro was designed with premium features in mind, but there were some noticeable omissions that lead to a less-than-premium experience. Despite the high refresh rate and 16GB of RAM on the model I tested, basic tasks such as opening apps or scrolling menus also felt sluggish. It was usable, but I had expected much better from such a premium device.
Benchmarks like these aren’t a good indicator of performance. It’s also worth noting that our normal PCMark 10 test wouldn’t run with the app claiming it doesn’t work on ARM devices.
On the other hand, while Microsoft’s Calling Cards are a very welcome feature, it’s worth noting some of the other benefits the Surface device brings. Aside from video calling features first on a Surface tablet, it comes with support for both regular nanoSD cards and microSDXC cards. This is also the first Surface tablet to have a 5G chip that gives you phenomenal speeds for calling and data transfer if able.
Intel versions of the SCALE are available with up to 1TB of internal storage, so customers can rely on cloud storage if they go for an ARM model.

If you want the best battery life, then the Surface Pro 9 is your tablet. Microsoft claims it can get up to 19 hours of “typical device usage” on a single charge with 47.7Wh of battery power.
We were able to do a 720p video loop battery test, and the Galaxy Note 10 lasted 17 hours and 40 minutes! That’s one of the best scores we’ve recorded, beaten only by other ARM-based devices.
The Samsung Galaxy S9 battery was not impressive during this test, lasting an average of only 3 hours and 21 minutes. Turning on your tasks automatically when the battery gets to a certain point will help save you some power.

The Pro 9 doesn’t have as much endurance as other devices that cost more, but it lasts for a full day and has plenty of battery life left. It may even last about two days if your usage is lighter and shorter.
The downside to the Intel Core m3 is that the estimates for long battery life are lower. This system would last a maximum of 15.5 hours – that’s less than Microsoft Surface Pro 8, which gets you a full day of battery life.
Most people quickly blast-charge their Surface Pro 6 ports and can easily go through one full charge in the course of a day. But when you are running low, Microsoft maintains that it has designed charging options to be convenient and safe for your device.
By the hour, I had seen a 22% improvement in revenue. As the timer ticked away, my traffic only increased.

Performance issues with others
The Surface Pro 9 runs Windows 11 Home out of the box, giving you one of the closest to “stock” experience on this model. It should come as no surprise that manufacturers rarely make big changes to the operating system.
When I saw the two apps pre-installed on the Surface Pro 4, I noticed Microsoft Whiteboard for handwritten notes and sketches. These would be genuinely useful for most users.
While the transforming landscape of ARM-based productivity has given us some very enticing computing technologies, it still doesn’t deliver optimal experience for third-party apps. This means that when working with arm-based products, you need to rely on Microsoft’s software such as Edge or Word for a near-native experience. However, many app developers don’t understand this process and rely on emulation instead.
In the case of these Surface Pro 9 machines, performance issues aren’t as easy to figure out. You might have to deal with emulated apps in order to get the most out of these machines. It also makes it less appealing because everything runs slower than other models from Microsoft.
