Microsoft Exchange is a work email server with offices in 80 countries. The victims have mostly been representatives of small and medium-sized businesses, according to the news release.

Russian cybercriminals have been cracking into email accounts and stealing information from companies all over the country.

When employees of a company get an email from [email protected], mentioning that the recipients need to pay $10,000 to retain their stolen information from being leaked, hackers are most often the perpetrators. In some cases, the ransom paid reached $10,000. That’s according to experts.

According to lead researcher, Teymur Kheirkhabarov from the BI.Zone Cyberdefense Center, a huge amount of companies are at risk for not installing these critical updates on time, which leads to cyberattacks that cost huge amounts of money in time and data for the victims.

This latest attack proves the importance of closing gaps in the company’s cybersecurity perimeter. In particular, a lot of thought should be given to its backup platforms, as a successful cyberattack can completely shut down the security capabilities of an enterprise.
