The company d-Matrix is trying to help accelerate AI models with its new hardware technology that isn’t publicly available yet has raised $44 million in a Series A round of investments. Microsoft is developing a machine Learning platform called “Project Bonsai” to enable deep reinforcement learning. It’s an open source project that allows developers and researchers to create new models, train them in Microsoft Azure Machine Learning Studio, and share with the world.

Microsoft is taking on the challenge of artificial intelligence and has created Project Bonsai.

Project Bonsai was recently developed at Microsoft and is currently available as a preview.

The goal of the Project Bonsai effort is to operate on the fundamental, low-level aspects of AI that are hard to automate, in order to make them easier to train with deep reinforcement learning networks. It will develop technologies for industrial control, including chip design and manufacturing. One part of that technology is a capability to train models using Inkling, a high-level language developed at Microsoft.

Deep reinforcement learning doesn’t require labeled data, Maitra explained. Rather, it learns with feedback from the environment and mimics that in a simulation. At the end of a training loop, it produces an RL agent which Microsoft refers to as “brains.” Brains can take meaningful actions to complete the task at hand.

Microsoft’s Project Bonsai has created a compiler that can build deep reinforcement learning tools for its silicon. A key goal of Project Bonsai is to help support the continued growth and deployment of generative AI models, which will have a major impact on d-Matrix’s business and product plans.

After all, bringing AI capabilities to their customer seemed the only way forward. “We want to enable these generative models because they take a lot of hardware-based resources (i.e., processing power and memory) and there are integration constraints as well,” Bhoja said. “You basically have to do them in a very energy-efficient way so that you’re not using more power than your data centers can handle.”
