When viewing Microsoft Word documents on Linux, text will look quite different and it will be difficult to find fonts like Times New Roman, Arial, etc.
I’ll show you how to install these fonts in Ubuntu and other Ubuntu-based Linux distributions. Keep reading to find out more about why these aren’t available as default fonts.

Why don’t Microsoft fonts work without installing them in Linux?

Times New Roman, Arial, and other such fonts are owned by Microsoft and they are not open source. Many Linux distributions do not include these fonts by default to avoid licensing issues.
Ubuntu and some other Linux distributions use open-source fonts, Liberation fonts, to substitute Microsoft fonts by default. The Liberation Fonts were specifically created by Red Hat to be substitutes for Arial Narrow, Times New Roman, and Courier New. When you open a document in Times New Roman that has not been converted, the default font of your computer will be substituted with a Liberation Font so the document is readable.
Liberation fonts are not identical to Microsoft’s fonts, and in some cases you may need to revert back to Arial or Times New Roman. Schools, universities and other public and private organizations require you to submit documents in one of those fonts.
If you use LibreOffice, Microsoft fonts might not work for you. However, there are ways to install them on other operating systems like Ubuntu or Arch Linux!
Installing Microsoft fonts on Ubuntu-based Linux distributions
You can easily install new fonts in Ubuntu by downloading them on your own, or you can use the Microsoft fonts. Ubuntu provides an easy way of installing these popular fonts (which are cost-free).
Microsoft has released its core fonts for free and it is now possible to export the fonts to different operating systems, including Ubuntu. However, before installing the Microsoft fonts in Ubuntu, it is important that you read and accept a EULA (End User License Agreement). Once you do this, everything should be able to proceed normally.
sudo add-apt-repository universe
Update your Ubuntu repository cache by running the following command:
sudo apt-get update
Install the Microsoft fonts by running this command:
sudo apt-get install msttcorefonts
The following command is for updating the OS and installing fonts: sudo apt update && sudo apt install ttf-mscorefonts-installer
Press tab, then select OK and press enter when the Microsoft End user agreement appears.
Configuring
By holding the Control key, you can highlight text.
Click Yes to accept Microsoft’s agreement:
