Microsoft Surface Pro 9 (SQ3) review: Windows on Arm is not ready

ideo calling.

I used the Qualcomm-powered Surface Pro 9 as my daily driver for over a week and have been extremely impressed by its capabilities. It has a good webcam with awesome features that make video calling a great experience. Unlike most other tasks, though, it was frustratingly slow in day-to-day work use.

One of the best things about lifestyle is that most apps wihch you use are not running on natively on Arm. That means they’re many more apps that people have access to, which lowers the barrier to entry. You can enjoy video content, chat with other people, or game on your device hassle free thanks to these native apps.

The Arm version of the Surface Pro 9, though it is faster than the Intel version, is still a gamble. The payoff depends on which constellation of apps you use every day and how they interact with the computer.

The Surface Pro 9 is nice looking, nice feeling, well built, and portable. The device has all the traits of the Surface Pro 8’s chassis that were excellent, but it is also quite expensive. The cheapest surface pro model on offer is $1,579.98 including the keyboard and stylus which aren’t included in the base cost. My test unit (and it’s still not the most expensive Pro 9 available) comes with a price tag of just over $1,800 with the keyboard and pen included. And for heavy users of many emulated apps, this device is too slow to be asking for over one thousand dollars from your pocket.

One hundred

Innate score

Microsoft Surface Pro 9 is an amazing tablet computer line that is powerful and has a lot of features.

It was not only good. It was also delicious!

120Hz display supporting dynamic refresh rate

5G support

A new camera with new AI features has arrived, 1080p to be specific.

SOME BAD COMMANDS

Expensive and the accompanying accessories aren’t included, like a keyboard or stylus.

A lot of apps are still slow

With just two USB ports (and no headphone jack), the LG G6 has a lot to offer.

That’s a steep price for a computer, but some other features make it worth it.

Here’s the good news: the design department didn’t try to fix what wasn’t broken, and the Pro 9 is as portable, well-built, and nice-looking as the Pro 8 was. The keyboard deck is sturdy. The kickstand holds its shape. And the stylus is quite comfortable (with a very handy garage folded into the keyboard). The 2880 x 1920, 120Hz display remains as smooth as ever. The Pro 9 is slightly lighter than the previous generation of tablet, but it’s not noticeable.

The keyboard is sturdy and doesn’t slip, so you can always find where you’re on the keys.

The Surface Pen when attached to the Surface Pro type cover.

The Surface Pen has a little slot for the Surface Pen, so that it is convenient for you to carry.

When the bottom of the Surface Pro 9 is detached from the keyboard, it’s perfect for multiple use.

The keyboard design is simple, yet comfortable to use.

The Surface Pen, which sells for $99, comes in a full range of colors and is compatible with all Microsoft tablets. The pen’s tip has two unique modes and an eraser.

The price you see is for the keyboard alone, not including any other supplies.

The only visible change that’s been made to the chassis is the color scheme. Surface Pro 8 models came only in black or silver last year and introduced a limited number of color options, but the Pro 9 has added new colors to the full exterior. As of now, it looks like only Intel Core i7 models have this medley of color options, with desktop-class SKUs SQ3 and Core i5 being platinum-only.

There’s also a limited-edition floral design. I, on the other hand, received an unpainted platinum model, so that’s what you’ll see here. Tom Warren from Verge got a closer look at the cute designs at Microsoft’s latest event in Redmond earlier this month.

Surface Pro 9 is an all-powerful laptop with the ability to create a tablet out of it and switch between both modes on the fly.

I want to be like Tom.

Microsoft has disrupted the luxury laptop market with the new form factor of the Pro 9. There are two USB-C 3.2 ports, as well as the Surface mobile charger slot. The design is quite similar to that of Surface Pro X and is even a bit thinner and lighter than its predecessor.

The big news about the Intel model is that it doesn’t have a feature you get with the Arm model. This may partially explain why the Arm version is more expensive. I ended up purchasing a pre-paid plan on Ubigi, and it runs on T-Mobile’s network in the US. (Getting this plan set up was a bit of a process that had me bouncing back and forth between Microsoft’s Mobile Plans app and Ubigi’s website several times. The Mobile Plans app, speaking of which, was very slow and froze up at multiple points during the process.)

The 5G speed tests I ran in The Verge’s Manhattan office showed that LTE speeds were as slow as from T-Mobile’s current low-band 5G network. That’s going to be more than fine for day-to-day navigation, but it seemed like Ubigi was using T-Mobile’s slower UHDB5G network while I was at the office. It seemed to work just fine, but there were pages that loaded slowly.

For the best laptops, look no further than Microsoft Surface Pro 9 (Arm).

Your standard wifi has become obsolete for many more advanced and mobile technology that is coming out now.

Since the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 is nearly double the GPU and CPU speed of the Intel model, it’s capable of handling more complex AI features than its competitor. The faster chips can power some new camera features, such as portrait background blur and automatic eye contact with voice detection.

These services do work, but they were slightly inconsistent in how well they worked. One feature that worked the best across all tests was automatic eye contact; regardless of where my gaze was directed, co-workers constantly told me it looked like I was staring directly at them. These services did a fine job of distinguishing me from other objects, and the blur effect did a great job of masking my background. In general, Automatic Framing followed me in order to capture my movements as it promised. However, there were times when it didn’t pick up that I was moving or panning around during conversations.

Voice Focus seemed to get a little much. My co-worker Umar told me that while he could consistently hear me, the tracks would seem to go in and out of focus for him. Sometimes, instrumental musical portions would completely fade out, then lyrics would come in again and then go away again. Sometimes my voice could be heard, but often it wasn’t. What was annoying to him was when songs from the previous call just played on repeat; there wasn’t anything that I did that muted them and he didn’t expect anything else to happen.

I really wish that Microsoft had put these great features on the Intel models (or on the Surface Laptop 5) for reasons that will shortly become clear.

With the Surface Pro 9, you can turn it into a magnetic keyboard and set of function keys for navigating your computer with ease.

Microsoft is continuing to sell the Pro 8, but with an Intel model as opposed to a Qualcomm model this time around. It’s unsurprising because shifting entirely away from Intel completely would have been a risky move. While Windows on Arm isn’t too far off where it needs to be right now, it still falls short of being worth $1,800.

I experienced a frustrating beginning to my workday with this computer. In addition to performance issues, it locked up, refused to update, and crashed immediately upon opening apps.

After using the Surface Pen to annotate a PDF, I noticed that my strokes came up late. Sometimes they would never show up at all. When I tried opening Lightroom, it often froze multiple times, and then crashed when I attempted to do anything else. With only Slack open in my workspace and switching between channels taking almost three seconds, Spotify also opened slowly with nothing in the background before simply freezing. Chrome had significant lag while typing in text, which led to all kinds of typos. Lastly, trying to watch YouTube videos was frustratingly slow: the video would freeze while the audio continued until sometimes I’d just give up altogether because it was too frustrating waiting for something as simple as a video to load.

It quickly became clear that I should try to stick to apps that were running natively on Arm. Trust me, I tried. I switched from Chrome to Edge, ever since the latter was certainly faster than Chrome (even while I was using Google’s apps), but it was still a notch slower than what you’ll see from other high-end computers – including other Arm-based devices such as those made by in Cupertino, California. While the actual experience of calling on Teams was fine, the app was still a bit unresponsive and slow to load. Despite this fact, and the fact that Microsoft had communicated with me about my concerns, and even sent a statement saying they cared about feedback and listening to their users – OneNote was one app in particular which felt totally zippy with no hiccups. Paint also seemed fine upon using it briefly.

I can easily swap my entire workload over to these few apps that are optimized for Arm devices. Many people don’t have the luxury or desire to do this, which is what makes buying it a risk.

The Surface Pro 9 is seen from behind in laptop mode.

It can be a risky endeavor, though.

While these devices tend to have a lower power supply than regular laptops, they’re usually still powerful enough for basic tasks like web browsing, word processing, and watching YouTube videos. With support for some high-intensity graphical interfaces running on them, people are on the lookout for longer battery life in laptops. So what’s the deal with these Snapdragon 8cx-based solid state disks? 10 hours of use is more than I’ve seen from most Windows laptops this year. But even with the bump the refresh rate down to 60Hz, I was able to eke out 12 hours and 23 minutes of use – fine enough for my needs.

The SQ3 Pro isn’t quite powerful enough to overcome the disadvantageous performance metrics. Furthermore, it doesn’t charge as quickly as other laptops and its battery life is also lacking. But I think it’s got a big enough screen for the job.

Microsoft Surface Pro 9 accessibility (as reviewed)

Though these are my recommendations and not a set in stone rule book, playing it safe has its perks. First of all, the letter keys are 0.6 x 0.6 inches with 0.1 inches between them. Then there’s that not-so-sweet backlit key, which will get you nowhere fast! The power button is 0.6 x 0.1 inches and small enough to see across the room without a microscope so you won’t hit it on accident; also large enough to be used as a power button, especially when using a headset or mouse! Lastly, those would be the volume keys–one for each channel–and they are 1.6 x 0.4 inches making them easy to press in any situation without resorting to thumbs or palms (or both!). These fresh looking grayish-blue plastic keys surround white text that bring your work down by such joyous means as “GHOSTBUSTER” one wide click away from saying “GOODBYE”.

The speakers produce sound at a range of 75 decibels, which is about 10% quieter than a standard external speaker.

The lightweight, slim laptop weighs 1.95 pounds without the keyboard attached. The keyboard adds an additional 0.68 pounds, making a total weight of two hundred and fifty four grams.

To open the lid, push up on the swivel lever with your thumb.

The touchscreen has not only a 1200:1 contrast ratio, but also a bright display and high resolution.

The touchscreen is 4 x 2.25 inches.

Setting up the system entails turning it on and navigating through several menus.

The Pro supports facial logins, but not fingerprint logins.

A new version of Windows.

Windows 11 includes improvements to accessibility features.

Windows 11 includes a built-in screen reader (Narrator). It supports third-party screen readers, including NVDA from NV Access and Jaws from Freedom Scientific. A full list of compatible software can be found on Microsoft’s website.

Windows 11 supports voice typing and speech recognition.

Windows 10 comes with a new interface called Windows Dark Mode, which changes the way your operating system is experienced. Stock settings can have inverted colors with Ctrl, C toggled all color filters, grayscale or blue-yellow (changing this option under Personalization). You can also choose from a Standard Dark Mode and dark custom colors.

The color and size of the caption can be customized and will appear close to the bottom of the screen.

You can remap the keyboard with Microsoft’s PowerToys. Sticky Keys is supported and an on-screen keyboard is available.

Touchpad Settings is a convenient resource for adjusting the size and speed of the cursor, as well as remapping your gestures.

Windows 11 supports eye control with external eye trackers.

Windows 11 includes a Snap Layout feature, which can be accessed by hovering over the ‘Maximize’ button from any open window.

With an extremely lightweight build and 5G support, the Surface Pro 9 could be the perfect on-the-go device. And that’s exactly what Microsoft says it’s been working toward — a laptop that can also run desktop apps like Photoshop. The iPad alternative for those who love Apple hardware but are fed up with its limitations.

Microsoft has a lot of experience designing hardware. But it hasn’t yet been able to get its Windows on Arm operating system to work smoothly on the high-end mainstream. Apple has gone a different route, creating an entirely new architecture that’s allowed its products to take the world by storm. Microsoft still has some ways to go.

There are a lot of question marks surrounding the Surface Pro 9. Do the major changes to this device come from Microsoft, or Qualcomm? I cannot speculate as to how much of that is Microsoft’s fault and how much is Qualcomm’s fault. But I’m reminded of Dieter Bohn’s review of the original Surface Pro X– their 2019 Arm model that started it all. “Windows itself runs quite well on the Surface Pro X,” Bohn wrote. “But like previous attempts, Microsoft hasn’t done enough to offset the compromises this aspirational computer asks of customers.” While that experience has improved in the past three years, the anecdote I find myself telling about the SQ3 Surface Pros 9 is fundamentally the same– Windows on Arm isn’t ready for $2,000 yet.

I struggled to choose which chip was better for Surface Laptop 5, so I went with Intel. However, Microsoft has pulled AMD from the Surface line and kept Snapdragon in. That’s a miss to me.

Look, I understand that not everyone is buying a Qualcomm-powered device and expecting the power of a Threadripper. That doesn’t mean battery life and building quality are irrelevant – but I know you’d rather have 5G connectivity. I’m also prepared for the comments section to be full of complaints about performance issues as well as people calling me crazy for using Microsoft’s software 24/7.

If you are someone who uses any of the apps we’ve mentioned even once a day, your experience will always be better on the iOS devices, Dell XPS laptops and AMD’s new Surface Laptop. Windows on Arm isn’t actually unusable — it’s just limited.
