In the future, customers will see fewer Microsoft 365 update notifications because their Office apps will update automatically while their computers are locked or idle.

It’s important that we’re always improving our software, and a new feature called “update under lock” will help us achieve that goal. It’s more secure and faster by using Click-To-Run delivery technology.

“An optimization that applies a Microsoft 365 Apps update while the device is locked or idle is expected to be introduced soon,” said Julia Lieberman, product manager at Microsoft.

Malware hackers have been found to use more than just one delivery tactic in their IcedID malware campaign.

“Update under lock” keeps your team’s workflow going without disruptions, and can provide an easier transition to a newer version of the app. It also saves what they’re working on, making updates more reliable by keeping old app states.

When you initiate an Office app update, the updates will start at the low-risk tasks (like macros, which are not running in the background) and save information after each task. If there’s no risk, the program will shut down until everything is updated.

The update is applied after the application is closed. The app’s state is reverted back to how it was before the update, all within about 4 seconds.

If apps can’t be shut down safely during Office updates, the normal process will remain intact so users are notified the next time they use the system.

The new Microsoft 365 updating mechanism will be used to keep apps like Microsoft Office up-to-date on Windows devices. For this update, it will apply to the following products:

Microsoft 365 comes with many great products, such as, but not limited to, Visio and Project. Microsoft Teams is a separate product that has its own update process.

This also applies to all other devices configured to receive updates from:
