Updates are great because they keep you on the latest version of your favorite apps and give you access to new features. However, having to reboot your device every time an update is released can be frustrating. Microsoft is working on a solution that will make this process much more efficient and smooth.
Microsoft has announced an update for its suite of office apps and productivity software that will help business owners keep their software up to date. As explained in a company blog post(opens in new tab), the new feature for Microsoft 365 now allows admins to push updates to businesses’ laptops and PCs while they’re in idle or locked down mode.
When an outdated application is open, the feature will shut it down (when safe to do so) and then update and restore the instance to its original state. Furthermore, this whole process takes four seconds with Microsoft’s Onedrive.

The new “update under lock” feature, Microsoft says, is designed to help customers ensure that their deployments are as secure and up to date as possible without taking employees out of the flow of their work.
Microsoft is rolling out a new optimization that allows Windows desktops to download and apply pending updates automatically, even when people are at work. Apps will still be able to run in the background during this process.
“Update under lock helps you stay compliant and adhere to your timeframes. It does this without disrupting your internal users, which may reduce the need for abrupt forced updates. Updating will be more reliable by saving app state before exiting.”
The new feature for Teams applies to practically all other Microsoft 365 applications (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, for example), which is installed on Windows devices. TechRadar Pro has asked Microsoft whether the feature will come to Mac OS in the future.
