Many people underestimate the risks of ransomware to Microsoft 365
A quarter of IT professionals either don’t know or don’t think Microsoft 365 data could be impacted by ransomware, according to research from Hornetsecurity.
Microsoft 365 is the top enterprise choice for enterprise content management and email, but 40% of IT professionals that used it in their company admitted they had no backup plan for if the data was lost by a ransomware attack.
Though the less-advanced ransomware variants can usually only encrypt targets like Windows file libraries, more advanced variants can also encrypt data stored inside SaaS applications such as Microsoft 365.

What is ransomware?
The survey included 2000 IT leaders, and revealed other findings related to ransomware.
In 2022, 24% of those surveyed replied that they have been victims of a ransomware attack. This is an increase from 21% in the previous year. However, only 19% of Hornetsecurity respondents had disaster recovery plans in place in 2022, despite the rise in attacks.
The survey found that of the more than one in five businesses (21%) that were attacked, only 69% did not pay. Of IT professionals whose organization was attacked, 56% paid up, while 40% lost data.
