You don’t need Microsoft Excel to produce fractions in Microsoft Word. This tutorial will show you how.
One common misconception is that you have to use specialist software like Excel, Google Sheets, or MATLAB to type equations and fractions. You don’t, as you can easily do it all in Word.

Microsoft Word is an excellent word processor, with tons of useful features to help you as you type. One of the most helpful is auto-formatting. If Microsoft Word recognizes certain words or phases, it will automatically make corrections to how they appear.
To make it easy to type fractions, Word automatically formats them. Also, you can easily visit the AutoCorrect section of Tools in order to add fractions that don’t come preloaded with Word.
To create fractions in Word, type the fraction using a forward slash and press the spacebar. For example, if you type 1/2 in Word, it will automatically convert to the matching special character.
If the fraction doesn’t change automatically, you’ll need to make sure the auto formatting (correcting) dictionary matches the type of fraction you are using. For example, if you typed 1/2, you would want to change your auto formatting (correcting) dictionary to ‘fraction’, not ‘number’.
Inserting fractions with special characters
If Word’s auto-formatting feature doesn’t work for you, you can enter special characters directly. This will allow you to type fractions in Word without any concern.
How to insert special characters in Microsoft Word:
If you often have to insert the fraction symbol, this guide will help. First, open your Word document. Go to the spot where you want to type out the symbol and place your cursor there. Next, press the Insert tab on the ribbon bar. From here, choose More Symbol and follow the steps given in order to insert a common fraction symbol.
Symbols show up in a drop-down menu, with a list of possible fractions. When you find one that you like, just double-click it or select it and press the Insert button.
Once you’re finished, just close the Symbols menu. Repeat this process for any additional fraction symbols. Make sure to move your cursor to a new position before you begin typing again–you can’t continue a fraction symbol at the same cursor location. You can also type special characters in Windows 11 and insert them into your document directly.
