Microsoft will stop providing technical support and security for Windows 7 and 8.1 on 10th January. In the upcoming week, Microsoft will take these actions quickly, as well as releasing Microsoft Edge 109, which will be the final version supporting outgoing operating systems.

Google Chrome also announced on February 7th that it is ceasing support for Windows 7 and 8.1.

Not supporting Windows 7 and 8.1 won’t stop them from working on available devices, but the security updates and new features won’t be notified.

On 10th of January, Webview2, which allows developers to embed Web content in their apps, will cease to exist.

According to 2021 records, approximately 100 million people use gadgets running Windows 7 still today.

When Windows 11 was launched, Microsoft again threatened to discontinue Windows 7 and 8.

As per the Lansweeper survey conducted previously in October, about 27 million Windows computers were running XP, 7 and 8, rather than Windows 11.

If Windows 7 or 8 is installed on a computer, it will operate just as well, but will be vulnerable to viruses. Not updating can lead to severe security issues in the future.

The closure of Windows 7 was announced by Microsoft in 2020. Users who purchased additional 3 years of extended security are still eligible for updates.

For no disruption in usage, Microsoft has advised users to update their Windows 7 and 8.1 devices to Windows 10 and 11.
