In the aftermath of Windows 11, Microsoft improved the Notepad app that hasn’t seen much change since Windows 95. According to a leak from a Microsoft product manager spotted by The Verge, it may be introducing even bigger features. The tweet was deleted a few minutes later after mentioning tabs in Notepad in Windows 11.
The screenshot included in the tweet shows two tabs, along with a note “confidential, do not discuss features or take screenshots.” While the warning clearly failed, this screenshot indicates that tabs are being tested and may arrive for Windows Insiders soon.

It is hard to believe tabs are not more prevalent in other apps given how much we rely on them in web browsers. Windows 11 introduced that feature to File Explorer earlier this year, reducing the sprawl across screens when searching or copying files. Several years ago, the company tested tabs for Windows 10 apps, but abandoned it.
In 1983, Microsoft released Notepad to help people learn to use a mouse in MS-DOS. In spite of the fact that it’s essentially the same plain text editor it was two decades ago, it’s amazing it’s still so widely used. My hat’s off to you if you use Notepad so much that you need tabs — but it’s only a rumor until we see it in action.
