Microsoft has partnered with Experian to bring identity theft protection monitoring to their Microsoft Defender software. It gives Microsoft 365 subscribers the ability to monitor personal and family identity details on the public internet and the dark web.

Microsoft released its new Microsoft Defender program in June to help customers better manage and monitor their security protections on all platforms. It is available on Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS at no additional cost for qualifying Microsoft 365 for Personal or Family subscription plans.

A partnership with Experian® provides powerful identity monitoring technology that allows you to stay aware of your online data and keep track of anything related to your identity.

Microsoft Defender can be used to detect and respond to 64 types of identity details for every security breach. These include email addresses, passwords, social security numbers, residential addresses, national IDs, passport numbers, bank account details, credit card information, etc. This makes Microsoft Defender especially useful for parents setting up profiles for their families to manage breaches for everyone in their family.

Microsoft Defender for Individuals Gets New Identity Theft Monitoring Capabilities

Microsoft Defender will notify you when personal data has been compromised. You’ll receive detailed information about the security incident, the potential risks, and possible solutions.

If a customer’s identity is compromised, they can get access to 24/7 support from identity theft experts who can help them stall the impact and provide full-service identity restoration for any fraudulent activity.

If you’re an identity theft monitoring subscriber, Microsoft has your back. It will provide coverage up to $1 million to recover your identity and up to $100 thousand of stolen funds or other damages caused by the identity theft.

How to enable identity theft monitoring in Microsoft Defender for Individuals

In order to start, you will need to open the Microsoft Defender app or head to the My Defender portal and sign in with your personal Microsoft account.

To get started with identity theft monitoring, click the “Get Started” button on the dashboard of your Defender Account.

Creating a profile and monitoring personal information is simple! Just follow the onscreen instructions to select the personal information types you want to monitor, then simply enter your data.

As the primary guardian for multiple family members, it can be difficult to keep up with all of their breaches. We can help!

Microsoft currently offers identity theft protection for US-based customers who have purchased Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscriptions. However, there’s no word on when they’ll extend this feature to other countries.
